Structure

  • PSU and PES have a linear polymer structure with repeating sulfone and ether groups.
  • The presence of sulfone and ether linkages in the polymer backbone contributes to their high-temperature stability and chemical resistance.

Identification

  • PSU and PES are combustible and can burn with a yellow flame.
  • When extinguished, they may emit a characteristic odor.

  • Density: The density of PSU and PES is approximately 1.24-1.38 g/cm³.
  • Pre-Drying: Pre-drying is generally not required for PSU and PES unless they have been exposed to moisture. If needed, drying can be done at temperatures around 120-150 °C for several hours.
  • Melt Temperature: The recommended melt temperature for PSU and PES is typically in the range of 330-400 °C.
  • Mold Temperature: The mold temperature for PSU and PES is usually set between 150-200 °C, depending on the specific requirements and part geometry.
  • Shrinkage: PSU and PES exhibit low shrinkage, typically less than 1%.

History

Polysulfone was first introduced by Union Carbide in the 1960s. Polyethersulfone, a derivative of polysulfone, was developed later by ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) in the 1970s. Since then, PSU and PES have gained popularity due to their excellent thermal and chemical resistance, mechanical properties, and processability. They have become important materials in various industries where their unique combination of properties is highly valued.
