Physical Properties

Typical Applications

  • PPS is commonly used in applications that require high-temperature resistance, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability.
  • It finds applications in the production of automotive components, electrical and electronic parts, industrial filters, pump and valve components, and more.

Structure

  • PPS is combustible and can burn with a blue flame.
  • When extinguished, it may emit a sulfurous odor.

  • PVDF is combustible and can burn with a blue flame.
  • When extinguished, it may emit a characteristic odor.

Useful data

  • Density: The density of PPS is approximately 1.35-1.43 g/cm³.
  • Pre-Drying: Pre-drying is generally not required for PPS unless it has been exposed to moisture. If needed, drying can be done at temperatures around 120-150 °C for several hours.
  • Melt Temperature: The recommended melt temperature for PPS is typically in the range of 280-320 °C.
  • Mold Temperature: The mold temperature for PPS is usually set between 80-150 °C, depending on the specific requirements and part geometry.
  • Shrinkage: PPS exhibits low shrinkage, typically less than 1%.

History

PPS was first developed in the 1960s by the Phillips Petroleum Company (now Chevron Phillips Chemical Company) and the Toray Industries in Japan. Commercial production of PPS began in the 1970s, and it has since gained popularity due to its excellent thermal and chemical resistance, making it a preferred material for demanding applications in automotive, electrical, and industrial sectors.
