Structure

  • PVDF has a linear polymer structure with alternating carbon and fluorine atoms.
  • The high fluorine content contributes to the material's exceptional chemical resistance and thermal stability.

Identification

  • PVDF is combustible and can burn with a blue flame.
  • When extinguished, it may emit a characteristic odor.

Useful data

  • Density: The density of PVDF is approximately 1.77 g/cm³.
  • Pre-Drying: Pre-drying is generally not required for PVDF unless it has been exposed to moisture. If needed, drying can be done at temperatures around 70-90 °C for several hours.
  • Melt Temperature: The recommended melt temperature for PVDF is typically in the range of 170-240 °C.
  • Mold Temperature: The mold temperature for PVDF is usually set between 40-100 °C, depending on the specific requirements and part geometry.
  • Shrinkage: PVDF exhibits low shrinkage, typically less than 2%.

History

PVDF was first developed in the 1960s by Pennwalt Corporation (now Arkema Inc.). Its commercial production began in the 1970s, and since then, PVDF has gained popularity due to its excellent chemical resistance, high-temperature stability, and electrical properties. It has become a widely used material in various industries, particularly in chemical processing, electrical engineering, and construction applications where its unique combination of properties is highly valued.
